Silkworms that have been genetically engineered to produce the human protein collagen have been developed by Japanese scientists. The insects generated silk and collagen in their cocoons, which is used to make fake skin and cartilage, as well as fill up lips and creases in cosmetic surgery. The most well-known silk comes from the cocoons of mulberry silkworm Bombyx mori larvae raised in captivity (sericulture). |
